WHAT'S AN ANC?
There are eight Wards in Washington, D.C. Each Ward is broken down into four to six Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs). The ANCs are further broken into Special Member Districts (SMDs), representing even smaller portions of each Ward.
For example, Judson lives in Ward 1, which contains ANC 1A, which contains SMD 1A06.
Members of the ANC are elected to represent their SMD's for two year terms by people in their neighborhood. They serve as their neighborhood's official voice in matters related to traffic, parking, recreation, street improvements, liquor licenses, zoning, economic development, police protection, sanitation and trash collection, and the District's annual budget.
Although they are not required to follow the ANCs' advice, the D.C. Government and Federal agencies are required to give the ANCs' recommendations "great weight."
Think of the ANC as your most local voice in government.
